Corneal Infections

Most corneal infections arise when the surface of the eye becomes scratched, allowing bacteria or other organisms such as viruses or fungi to gain access into the corneal tissue.  Contact lens use in general and poor contact lens hygiene in particular, especially when associated with a habit of sleeping with contact lenses in place, can significantly increase one’s risk of developing a serious corneal infection.

At the East West Eye Institute, we have special expertise in the diagnosis and management of all types of corneal disease.  It is important to note that a corneal infection in some instances can lead to rapid, devastating and permanent loss of vision. Therefore, early diagnosis and appropriate treatment is imperative when a corneal infection is suspected.  Signs and symptoms of a corneal infection include pain, redness, blurry vision and sometimes a “sandy feeling” like the presence of a foreign body in the eye.

Should you develop any of the above symptoms, especially if they fail to spontaneously resolve or progressively worsen, contact any of our offices immediately.  Our doctors are on call 24 hours a day, and can provide you with the appropriate attention you deserve and help prevent serious vision loss.  A red painful eye should be treated as an emergency and only an Eye MD (ophthalmologist), like those at the East West Eye Institute, have the knowledge and training to appropriately manage these serious ocular conditions.
