The doctors of East West Eye Institute will instill special numbing eye drops into your eyes prior to your procedure. These drops will help ensure a painless, comfortable procedure. One can expect to feel pressure as well as manipulation of the eyelids, but frank pain is unusual. A scratchy feeling in the eyes the day of the procedure is typical, but fortunately this should quickly reside. Most patients describe the anxiety associated with the procedure to be much worse than the procedure itself. A mild sedative is often prescribed to be used just prior to the procedure to help ease this anxiety. For many patients however, even this is not necessary.
Maybe. If you are over the age of 40, have good distance vision without glasses, and only need glasses to read, then you have a condition called presbyopia. Presbyopia is a normal age-related decline in our ability to focus on near objects. For many people used to clear vision at all distances, the onset of presbyopia is often very frustrating. Never before having the need for reading glasses, these individuals find it very burdensome to suddenly become dependent on glasses for such simple activities as reading a dinner menu, a telephone book, or a favorite novel. For these individuals, monovision lasik is an option. Here, one eye is used to see distance objects and the other is corrected so that it is used to see near objects. It is a compromise (one loses binocularity), but for many patients the benefits of freedom from glasses far outweigh any disadvantages.
Although individual healing times may vary, many patients who undergo lasik are back to work the following day with no restrictions. Some patients with higher prescriptions may take longer than those with lesser prescriptions to regain full activity. Your progress will be monitored at regular intervals, and you will be advised accordingly.
